The dumb refrence to the play 'Once Upon A Mattress' song 'Shy' aside, I figured I should start a thread on the matter of being shy. Which is why I need help, because I'm incredibly, almost painfully shy. In short...I need some advice of some sort, so that's why I'm here.

I do have friends, however they either introduced themselves to me or I had a helpful nudge from a parent. So...here comes my plea, can someone give me advice on how to be less shy?

Hey Elaine ! Being shy is hard to get around, seriously, take it from one who's shy herself *bows* Often people mistake shyness as aloofness, anti-socialness (my favourite saying for this is: "I'm not anti-social, I just don't like you.") and arrogance or the belief that you are superior to them. But it's not.

When I'm around people I don't know, I get these butterflies in my stomach, and sometimes I stutter or can't get out what I'm trying to say. Does that happen to you too?

A way I get around this is to smile at people in the hallways, or just say hi. You don't have to strike up a conversation, or slow down your walk (as long as you aren't running), but a small smile will sort of loosen you up. Then start off by asking about homework, or what the teacher meant by a certain thing - if you're one of those child geniuses, then please, fake it

If you're comfortable online, get their IM account or email and talk to them online.

we did once upon a matress last year for high school play! ... of course, tech was perfect (yes, shocking isnt it ... my beautiful tech crew preformed perfectly... singing suckd, but tech was perfect.)
